My game and my rounds at British Open:
As usual I played a practice round on friday afternoon to see this 18 hole course again. Luckily, there were only small changes in comparison to my last visit at Lloyd Park last summer. My strategy for this Par 60 course was absolute clear: Play safe, avoid bogeys and the birdie will come automatically. To be honest, this decision was not too bad refering avoiding bogeys. After three rounds I only took four bogeys which is quiet good. But I missed to many birdies. There are a few holes on which I should reach the basket with just one throw. Instead of getting many chances for birdies I had to save some pars. Especially in the first round, I had the opportunity to play with UK´s Disc Golf Legend Derek Robins, I had to wait nearly half of the round for my first birdie. So I ended this round with a 56, which was with a -4 not too bad. But I got a great lesson how to play this course. With clean and smooth drives Derek managed to play a great round with -8 which was great to watch!
With a great flight I started much better in round two. Although I missed a couple of putts and got a 5 on my second last hole I was still satisfied with my score of 53. This round took me in the second flight and I was just four strokes behind the lead, what would be an excited initial position for the third round. My plan was still to play safe. But I really wanted to birdie my favorite hole #4 and the very challenging #9. Unfortunately these holes broke up my game. At hole #4, which was my third hole in round three, I parked my second shot within 4 feet next to the basket. Due to a foot fault I had to do a re-throw, but I wasn´t able to repeat this great shot and couldn´t birdie this hole. I was a little bit out of focus and got a bogey on the next very challenging hole #5. Hole #10 brought me instead a birdie another bogey and I had to fight for not loosing to many strokes on other players. I finished round 3 with the same score as round 1: 56. This was not what I aimed for. I was ranked on place 9 after my 56 but still made it to the final 12 and I had 9 more holes to go.
I really, really love finals. I love them so much that I wonderd why I played so bad on these final nine. Maybe it was hole 16. I got a 7 (seven!) on this one. Yes, I think this hole broke up my game. So I finished on place 11. Let´s do this better the next years!
Doesn´t matter at all – I had a fantastic weekend with all my flight partners, all the staff and volunteers! Thank you very much!
I´ll be back Croydon!
